On the uphill side of the trail is a stand of Alaska yellow cedar. During past ice ages, plants and animals that evolved in far northern regions retreated south ahead of the advancing ice. When the climate warmed and the glaciers receded, "islands" of northern plants and animal species remained. Alaska yellow cedar and mountain goats are examples of these ice age relicts. Now, in a time of warming global temperatures, how will these species adapt if conditions continue to change?
