Imagine a glacier filling the valley between this overlook and Martha Falls. The falls cascade down a volcanic cliff created about 90,000 years ago. At that time lava flowed between the glacier that filled this canyon and the Tatoosh Range - literally molding the lava between rock and ice into the cliff face you see today.

Cooling lava often forms columns that point towards cooler surfaces. Here they point almost horizontally toward the glacier that once filled this valley.

The Martha Falls exhibit panel is located on a low rock wall at the edge of a pull out along Stevens Canyon Road. The panel looks southwest towards the Tatoosh Range and overlooks Martha Falls. Stevens Canyon Road is open to vehicles during the summer, typically from June-October.
