Season: Year-round
Longmire is located in the southwest corner of Mount Rainier National Park and is 6.5 miles (10.5 km) east of the Nisqually Entrance. The historic Longmire Service Station is next to the National Park Inn.
Mount Rainier was the first national park to allow visitors to visit by automobile. Many of them stopped at this service station to fuel their vehicles on their up and down the mountain. Constructed in 1929, it had gas pumps styled in the manner of the time period, with a sheltered bay connecting to a sales and information office. Built out of logs with local rocks framing the foundation and gas pump island, the service station, along with the other historic buildings in Longmire, serves as an example of the National Park Service's rustic style of architecture. As one of the best surviving examples of a rustic gas station in the national park system, the service station is also an independently listed National Historic Landmark.
Today, the service station portrays the history of travel in the park. The Transportation Exhibit inside the service station is open daily when the Longmire Museum is open. An outdoor Service Station Exhibit Panel, part of the Longmire Historic Tour, is located nearby during the summer.
