Title: Longmire Library

Main Text
This building, completed in 1910, is the oldest government-built structure in Longmire. It features a steeply-pitched cedar shingle roof to shed snow and rough lapped Douglas-fir siding.

It first served as a community kitchen before becoming a library in the 1920s. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it was a branch of the Pierce County library system. Afterwards, the building served other purposes, such as a clubhouse for the Youth Conservation Corps.

After its renovation in 1981, it resumed its role as the park library where staff research the park's history and resources.

Exhibit Panel Description
The main text against a green background fills the top half of the small, vertically-oriented exhibit panel. The bottom half of the exhibit panel is filled with a black-and-white historic photo of the Longmire library building partially obscured by trees.

Visit This Exhibit Panel
The Longmire Library exhibit panel is part of the Longmire Historic District Walking Tour. It is located next to a sidewalk that leads east from the Longmire Museum and across the street from the Longmire Administration Building. Longmire is open year-round, but the exhibit panels are removed during the winter. However, you can still pick up a Longmire Historic District Walking Tour map at the Longmire Museum and view the buildings in winter.
