Title: Longmire General Store
Main Text
This building was constructed in 1911 by the same company that built the original National Park Inn, the Eastern Tacoma Railroad. The building was designed in the National Park Service's rustic style of architecture that used local materials to blend buildings with their natural settings.
Through the decades, the building's use has changed with the needs of the times. It was originally a clubhouse for National Park Inn guests. It later served as an employee residence and then as a Hiker's Center.
Today the building houses the General Store that sells firewood, snacks, gifts, and souvenirs to park visitors.
Exhibit Panel Description
The main text against a green background fills the top half of the small, vertically-oriented exhibit panel. The bottom half of the exhibit panel is filled with a black-and-white historic photo of the general store. The general store is a small wood log building with an angled roof that extends over a covered porch with two gabled window dormers.
Visit This Exhibit Panel
The Longmire General Store exhibit panel is part of the Longmire Historic District Walking Tour. It is located to the right of the path in front of the Longmire General Store, which is next to the National Park Inn. Longmire is open year-round, but the exhibit panels are removed during the winter. However, you can still pick up a Longmire Historic District Walking Tour map at the Longmire Museum and view the buildings in winter.
