The Oasis of Mara is the easiest to reach oasis in Joshua Tree National Park. Located near the Joshua Tree National Park headquarters in the town of Twentynine Palms, this oasis is reached by a short and level paved path. The water from this oasis supports a vibrant plant and wildlife community, including a cluster of California fan palms, making this a good location for viewing desert plant and wildlife.
The Oasis of Mara has also long supported human life in the area. Named "Mara", meaning "the place of little springs and much grass" by the Serrano, this oasis is believed to be their first home in this world. According to their traditions, the fan palms at this oasis were first planted for every boy born in the village. The water of this oasis was able to support a village to live in the desert by providing the necessary water for the plants needed for food and materials to make items such as baskets, sandals, and homes.
