Lost Horse Loop is a 6.2-mile loop trail that combines natural beauty and historical interest. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views of Lost Horse Valley and visit a historic mining site.
Lost Horse Mine operated between 1893 and 1936, producing over 9,000 ounces of gold. It was one of the most profitable mines within the park boundaries. At the mine, stay outside the fenced area and do not take any historic items
Lost Horse Loop also provides an opportunity to see bighorn sheep. The Desert bighorn sheep are sometimes found in the rocky terrain near the Lost Horse trail. If you see any sheep, please keep a respectful distance.
There is very little shade on this strenuous hike. It is not recommended in the summer heat. Make sure to bring adequate food and water supplies and proper sun protection. Visitors seeking a shorter trail can hike to Lost Horse Mine out and back instead of completing the loop.
