Desert Tortoise (Silver Bell)
in
Joshua Tree

Look up near the top of the rocky hills southwest of this pullout. Spot Silver Bell Mine ruins, one of 300 mines once active in Joshua Tree National Park. The surrounding landscape is filled with creosote, desert lavender, bladderpod, and other shrubs. This section of the park is part of the transition zone between the Mojave and Colorado Deserts.
