The Burnt Hill Trail travels through the hills of the Black Rock Area and is lined with pinyon trees, Joshua trees, and various shrubs. It is 7.3 miles round trip with 910 feet of elevation gain. It will lead you through a wash, a narrow canyon, and an open valley offering a nice variety of what the Black Rock region has to offer. This trail is great for those camping in the Black Rock area and looking for a longer day hike from their site.
To make this hike a loop, return on the Eureka Peak Trail. To extend your hike to the top of Eureka Peak, from the junction of the Burnt Hill Trail and Eureka Peak Trail, you can hike 2.4 miles (round trip) to the summit and back to the junction.
Because this trail is located at a higher elevation than much of the park, it has slightly cooler temperatures on warm days. However, there is very little shade mid-day, so it is not recommended in the summer heat. Make sure to bring adequate food and water supplies and proper sun protection.
There are multiple options for parking. Park at the Black Rock Backcountry Trailhead or park at the Black Rock Nature Center and start the trail near campsite 30. On busy days, there is additional overflow parking in the horse camp area.
