Located where the McKittrick Canyon Trail first breaks through the ridge, "The Notch" is a strenuous hike and the last traditional day hike destination within South McKittrick Canyon. Most day hikers turn around here or at the Grotto.
The Notch is a physical break in the ridge line that the trail passes through. From this spot, excellent views into the interior of South McKittrick Canyon can be had.
Beyond this point the McKittrick Canyon continues what will feel like an endless climb toward the McKittrick Ridge campsites and the trail junction with the Tejas Trail.
