Rim Village overlooks Crater Lake, which is visible about 50% of the winter and spring seasons. Snowstorms and clouds obscure views of the lake most other days. But looking around the caldera and Wizard Island, the blanket of white which has settled on the earth enhances the brilliance of the water whether the sun dips in and reflects blue or the clouds soften it to gray.
Snow in Rim Village can be 10 to 15 ft (3 to 4.6 m) deep. A "snow ramp", (which is sometimes icy) provides the easiest access to the top of the snow. An observation room on the second floor of Rim Village Cafe & Gift Shop is accessible by elevator. It offers views of the lake until snow covers the window. While Covid is still prevalent, only 30 people at a given time will be permitted on the second floor.
Activities
Winter activities include lake viewing and photography, backcountry camping, skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, snowboarding, and of course, frolicking. There are no snowmobile routes in Rim Village. When conditions permit, North Entrance Road from Diamond Lake to North Junction is groomed, as an in and out snowmobile route. Fat tire bikes are not allowed in Rim Village or anywhere in the park.
Equip Your Wheels and Feet for Winter
As a winter destination, while behind the wheel and with feet on the ground, safety is the utmost concern. Rim Village lies at an elevation of 7100 ft ( 2165 m). The approaching roads will be plowed but prepare for some level of snow and ice. Carry chains, water, and extra clothing or blankets.
