At the base of the Chisos Mountains you can see the community of Panther Junction. This location is not only the park's headquarters, Panther Junction is also the main residential area for employees and their families. As a large national park, Big Bend employs rangers in resource management, law enforcement, interpretation, administration, and maintenance. The Big Bend community also includes concession employees of Forever Resorts, postal workers, school teachers, volunteers, and Border Patrol agents. To serve families living here, the San Vicente School accommodates kids in kindergarten through 8th grades. Attendance averages 20-30 students per year. Once they reach the 9th grade, students attend high school in the community of Terlingua, 45 minutes away.
