Big Bend
During your walk thus far, how many different bird songs do you think you have heard? Resident birds that can be heard or seen year round incude Spotted Towhee, Canyon Towhee, Canyon Wren, Bewick's Wren, Black-crested Titmouse, Rufou-crowned Sparrow, and Acorn Woodpecker. The call of the Acorn Woodpecker is distinctive and can be heard at any elevation in the Chisos Mountains. Their most common call is a loud waka-waka-waka which is frequently used for greeting family members or disputing territory boundaries. Looking a bit like wide-eyed clowns, Acorn Woodpeckers store thousands of acorns each year by jamming them into specially made holes in trees. A family member is always on alert to guard their acorn hoard from thieves such as black bear.
