Resident birds that can be heard or seen year round incude Spotted Towhee, Canyon Towhee, Canyon Wren, Bewick's Wren, Black-crested Titmouse, Rufou-crowned Sparrow, and Acorn Woodpecker. The call of the Acorn Woodpecker is distinctive and can be heard at any elevation in the Chisos Mountains. Their most common call is a loud waka-waka-waka which is frequently used for greeting family members or disputing territory boundaries. Looking a bit like wide-eyed clowns, Acorn Woodpeckers store thousands of acorns each year by jamming them into specially made holes in trees. A family member is always on alert to guard their acorn hoard from thieves such as black bear.
