Waldron Bates was one of the great path makers on Mount Desert Island. Though one might say his legacy is best embodied by the Bates cairns that still mark Acadia's trails to this day, a memorial plaque dedicated to him can be found at the southern intersection of the Gorham Mountain and Cadillac Cliffs trails. The inscription reads as follows:
1856-1909
WALDRON BATES
IN
MEMORIAM
MCMX
