George B. Dorr Plaque
in
Acadia

George B. Dorr considered the area around Sieur de Monts Spring to be the heart of Acadia National Park. He had purchased this area in 1909 to prevent a commercial water bottling facility from being built there. It was therefore a fitting location for a plaque to honor the many years he spent expanding and advocating for the park. The memorial plaque can be found on the south side of the Nature Center. The inscription reads as follows:

IN MEMORY OF

GEORGE BUCKNAM

DORR

1853–1944

Gentleman Scholar

Lover of nature

Father of this

National Park

Steadfast in his zeal

to make the beauties

of this Island

available to all.
